1. Swedish Massage

This is the most commonly applied massage technique in spas and also the most sought after. A new recipient is usually administered with this massage and it combines five different movements such as kneading, sliding, rhythmic tapping, shaking and cross fiber to considerably reduce stiffness in joints and pain. This massage also induces increased circulation of blood to the muscles.

2. Deep Tissue Massage

This one is effectively used for removing stress and muscle tension resulting from sports activities. This massage helps relieve pain by rearranging the deep layers of body muscles and its connective tissues. This is more of a focused type and uses movements similar to the Swedish massage techniques.

3. Hot Stone Massage

Smooth and hot stones are used in this massage to apply pressure and heat to the body. The heat from the stones goes deep in to the muscles of the one receiving the massage and release stress.   Stones can also be applied strategically on different parts of the body by the therapist to bring out specific results. Apart from relaxing the body this massage also relives pain if there is any. This is very useful for conditions such a back pain, ache, muscle tension, anxiety and stress.

4. Reflexology

This type does not use any oil in the massage and a special technique is used to apply pressure on the hands and feet. The special methods applied in this massage are believed to relive tension, pain and ache in all parts of the body.

5. Sports Massage

This type is specifically designed for people who are involved in physical activity. But you don't have to be a professional athlete to have one-it's also used by people who are active and work out often. The focus isn't on relaxation but on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance.

A combination of techniques are used. The strokes are generally faster than Swedish massage. Facilitated stretching is a common technique. It helps to loosen muscles and increase flexibility.

6. Trigger Point Therapy

A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in other parts of the body. A trigger point in the back, for example, may reduce referral pain in the neck. The neck, now acting as a satellite trigger point, may then cause pain in the head. The pain may be sharp and intense or a dull ache.

Trigger point massage therapy is specifically designed to alleviate the source of the pain through cycles of isolated pressure and release. In this type of massage for trigger point therapy, the recipient actively participates through deep breathing as well as identifying the exact location and intensity of the discomfort.

7. Cranial Sacral Therapy

(also known as craniosacral therapy) is a gentle, noninvasive form of bodywork that addresses the bones of the head, spinal column and sacrum. The goal is to release compression in those areas which alleviates stress and pain.

Cranial sacral therapy seeks to restore the natural position of the bones and can decrease  stress from chronic injuries as well as provide relief from migraine headaches, neck and back pain, temporomandibular joint disorder (the inflammation of the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull) and more.
8. Prenatal Massage

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (or swelling). In addition, massage reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension-which aids in better sleep-and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.

Here are benefits of prenatal massage:
  • Relieves headaches
  • Relaxes muscle tension Reduces fatigue
  • Alleviates backaches
  • Relieves leg cramps
  • Reduces swelling/edema
  • Relieves pain
  • Enhances sleep
9. Geriatric Massage Therapy

is designed to address the specific needs of the elderly population. This type of massage for the elderly uses gentle and light application of massage techniques and can include passive stretching and a light oil or lotion to permit your muscles to be worked on without causing excessive friction to the skin. These techniques can help enhance blood circulation, combat depression, improve balance and flexibility, reduce the pain of arthritis, increase joint mobility, improve posture, and encourage overall well-being.

Geriatric massage can be especially helpful for maintaining and improving overall health as we age. It also has been shown to relieve anxiety and provide comfort, especially to touch-deprived elderly clients.

Body lotion after we shower. Facial moisturizer before bed. Whitening strips before the big presentation at work. These products have become a part of our daily routines, and we often use them without thinking about the chemicals they contain and our constant exposure to them. And the numbers may be higher than you think—a 2005 study conducted by the Environmental Working Group found that the average woman’s daily beauty regimen contains a shocking 168 chemical ingredients, while men encounter an average of 85.
Get glowing and remove makeup with grapeseed oil
Actress Emma Stone recently revealed she uses grapeseed oil as facial moisturizer for her allergy-prone skin, and the star is on to something! Grapeseed oil is suitable for a wide range of skins types—both those with acne-prone skin and those who are concerned about the appearance of aging will benefit from this antioxidant-packed oil.  It’s non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores, and it can also help prevent wrinkles that come with premature aging by blocking damaging free radicals. Three to four drops per application should be all you need, and you can apply with your fingers or using a cotton pad.

This oil is also an effective eye makeup remover. It banishes mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow—all while moisturizing the sensitive eye area.

Argan oil for silky, sleek locks – and more

Argan oil is the star ingredient in many popular hair serums right now, but you can cut out the chemicals and fillers used in many of these products by using this oil in its pure form. You’ll tame frizz and lock in moisture by adding a couple drops of this fatty-acid-rich oil to the ends of your hair. Apply while it is still damp; then dry and style as usual.

If your hair is in need of more serious TLC, create a hair mask: heat the oil, apply it to the scalp and hair, and cover with a towel for several hours before shampooing and conditioning as usual.

Even better: this oil doesn’t just benefit your mane. You can use it on your face and body as a moisturizer, and even on your nails to strengthen and nourish them.

Tone your skin and zap zits with apple cider vinegar

Reduce redness, tone and exfoliate skin, and treat acne—all with a product found in your kitchen pantry! If it sounds too good to be true, meet the wonder product: apple cider vinegar (ACV). Containing malic and lactic acids, as well as antibacterial properties, this product helps return skin to normal pH when applied to the face and body, and can be applied up to twice per day when made into a toner.  Simply dilute two tablespoons of ACV with one cup of water, and apply to face using a cotton pad. You can store the unused portion in the fridge for up to one week.

When purchasing apple cider vinegar, which is found at most grocery and health food stores, it is preferable to select one that is unpasteurized and contains “the mother,” which is healthy bacteria.

Make your smile sparkle with strawberries

Many of us want a whiter smile, but are concerned about the chemicals in commercial whitening strips. Consider a healthy alternative: berries! Strawberries contain malic acid, which can help remove surface stains from teeth—safely and inexpensively.
Mash a strawberry into a paste using a fork, and amp up the whitening power by blending in baking soda. Apply to teeth using a soft toothbrush, leave on for five minutes and then brush with toothpaste to remove the mixture. Note: both baking soda and the acid from fruit can be harsh on teeth, so do not use this mixture more than once per week.

Fight flakes (and acne!) with an avocado face mask

Has winter got you feeling flaky? The answer to your dry skin may lie in your kitchen: an avocado face mask. The fruit is packed with hydrating healthy oils and unsaturated fats that will help moisturize even the most sensitive of skin. Mash half of one ripe avocado in a bowl, and mix in one tablespoon of honey. Apply to your face, leave on for ten-to-fifteen minutes and then gently wash off using lukewarm water.

If your problem is not dry skin but acne, skip the honey and mix in one egg white and one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice, and apply the same as above. Both masks can be used once per week, and are a great way to avoid the preservatives and chemicals found in many drugstore products.

To enhance your at-home spa experience, use two slices from a chilled cucumber, and place them over your eyes while the mask is applied to naturally reduce puffiness.

Pamper yourself with coconut oil body scrub

Coconut oil is perhaps the most versatile natural beauty product. Packed with vitamin E and fatty acids, it is an anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial super-oil that can be used for everything from dry hair to athlete’s foot.

If you have sensitive skin or want to avoid the sodium laureth sulfate present in most body washes and scrubs, use coconut oil as a homemade body scrub that is as easy on your skin as it is on your wallet.  You will need just two to three simple ingredients: coconut oil, sugar, and (if desired) an essential oil, such as lavender. Using a ratio of two-part sugar to one-part coconut oil, warm the oil in the microwave and stir in the sugar and essential oil.

While you’re in the shower, swap your aerosol can of shaving cream for coconut oil and reap the silky skin benefits when shaving your legs. The oil hydrates skin and protects against nicks.

When selecting coconut oil for use on the skin, pick an organic, virgin or extra-virgin, unrefined, and cold pressed version.

We people always feel stress either on our work, school, and home or in our everyday living. Most of us find ways to get away from our stress, just to feel relax and feel relieve for a moment. But what are the best things to do to cure your stress?

Here are the tips on how to relieve your stress:

1.      Listen to music.

Feeling overwhelmed by stressful situation, try taking a break and listening to relaxing classical music. It is said that playing calm music has a positive effect on the brain and body, can lower blood pressure, and reduce cortisol, a hormone linked to stress.

2.     Talk out your problems.

You may call a friend and talk about your problems if you are feeling overwhelmed. Good relationship with friends and loved ones are important to any healthy lifestyle. You may also talk yourself through it, if calling a friend is not an option and calmly take yourself of what is the best thing to do to solve your problem.

3.      Eat right.

Stress levels and a proper diet are closely related. Unfortunately, it’s when we have the most work that we forget to eat well and resort to using sugary, fatty snack foods as a pick-me-up. Try to avoid the vending machine and plan ahead. Fruits and vegetables are always good, and fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the symptoms of stress.

4.      Try drinking tea.

According to studies, large dose of caffeine causes a short-term spike in blood pressure and may cause your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis to go into overdrive.  Instead of coffee or energy drinks, try green tea. It has less than half the caffeine of coffee and contains healthy antioxidants, as well as theanine, an amino acid that has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system.

5.      Go and exercise.

Exercise doesn't necessarily mean you do power lifting at the gym or training for a marathon. A short walk around the office or simply standing up to stretch during a break at work can offer immediate relief in a stressful situation. Getting your blood moving releases endorphins and can improve your mood almost instantaneously.

6.      Get some sleep.

Everyone knows stress can cause you to lose sleep. Unfortunately, lack of sleep is also a key cause of stress. This vicious cycle causes the brain and body to get out of whack and only gets worse with time. Make it a point to get the doctor-recommended seven to eight hours of sleep.
